In John 17:1–26 we are given a unique moment where we don’t just watch Jesus live or listen to His teaching—we hear His heart in prayer. Jesus prays for His disciples who were with Him that night and also for those who would follow Him as apprentices in the future. In this prayer we see what apprentices of Jesus look like: they are distinct from the world, in a battle, formed by God’s Word, sent on mission, united with one another, deeply loved by the Father, and living with future hope.
