What if Jesus really meant it when he said, “Love your enemies” and “turn the other cheek”? For many of us, non-resistance sounds naïve at best—and downright ridiculous at worst. What happens when evil is real, violence threatens people we love, and fighting back seems like the only responsible thing to do? This Sunday we’re wrestling honestly with Jesus’ radical call to peacemaking, the Mennonite Brethren commitment to non-resistance, the failures and dangers of both pacifism and just-war thinking, and the question: Can following Jesus really mean refusing the sword? You may disagree. You may have good reasons to disagree. But come curious, because Jesus’ answer may challenge more than our politics—it may challenge our understanding of what it means to trust him.
