As we commit ourselves to be more like Jesus, the next step of faith and obedience is baptism. The imagery of baptism itself is rich with spiritual metaphor. As we physically plunge beneath the water we symbolically declare that, in Christ, we've died to the old self-directed way of living that keeps falling short. As we resurface we identify with Jesus in his death and resurrection by publicly declaring in front of friends, family, co-workers and neighbors that we've been given a new Jesus-directed, Spirit-filled life – one full of new adventure, significance and purpose.
